President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday that seeks to make in-vitro fertilization more accessible.
Trump, who bizarrely referred to himself as the ‘father of fertilization’ on the campaign trail, signed the order during a extended trip to Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach to mark the Presidents’ Day holiday.
The EO tasks the assistant to the President for Domestic Policy with looking into recommendations on how to make IVF ‘drastically more affordable.’
‘Fertilization – I’ve been saying that we’re going to do what we have to do,’ Trump said as he explained the trio of EOs he had signed Tuesday. ‘And I think the women, and families, husbands, are very appreciative of it.’
His press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the order will ‘aggressively’ reduce out-of-pocket costs for the procedure that costs generally costs between $12,000 to $25,000 per cycle, according to the text of the order.
‘PROMISES MADE. PROMISES KEPT: President Trump just signed an Executive Order to Expand Access to IVF!’ Leavitt wrote on X.
‘The Order directs policy recommendations to protect IVF access and aggressively reduce out-of-pocket and health plan costs for such treatments,’ she said.
The order gives a deadline of three months for recommendations to be made.

During the 2024 presidential campaign, Trump bizarrely dubbed himself the ‘father’ of the fertility treatment during a Fox News town hall.
‘We really are the party for IVF,’ Trump told Fox News host Harris Faulkner.
He then declared about himself: ‘I’m the father of IVF.’
Last February a decision made by the Alabama state Supreme Court looked poised to hurt Trump in his reelection bid, as the justices ruled that stored embryos had the same legal protection as kids.
That ruling opened the door for doctors who perform IVF to be sued as they could be held liable for wrongful death.
Trump’s role in putting conservative justices on the Supreme Court who then overturned the federal right to an abortion with the Dobbs case in June 2022 was already under scrutiny.
Throughout the 2024 campaign Trump had to walk the line of being boastful about his role in overturning Roe v. Wade, while not alienating more moderate voters by saying he would support a national abortion ban.
Trump instead said the court rightly tossed the issue of abortion back to the states.
One the issue of IVF, Trump sided with the more moderate members of his party.

Some conservative Catholics are against the treatments because the process often involves the destruction of human embryos.
In August 2024, as Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris was gaining some traction, Trump promised that the U.S. government or insurance companies would pay for IVF treatments.
During the event at Mar-a-Lago Tuesday, which briefly turned into an impromptu press conference, staff secretary Will Scharf told reporters that the IVF order was crafted because it had become ‘unaffordable’ for Americans.
It directs the Domestic Policy Council to ‘examine ways to make IVF and other fertility treatments affordable for more Americans.’
